| Ipswich Shotokan Karate Club is the
very first club in the whole of the Japanese Karate Association of England to
be awarded the prestigious Sports England Clubmark accreditation after over eighteen
months of meetings, hours of paperwork building a comprehensive portfolio on running
a safe and professional Karate club. The instructors at ISKC have attended courses
from sports first aid to child protection and all matters in between, to run a
safe and well structured Karate club, where people, young and old, can develop
their sporting skills in a completely safe environment. IN the words of Suffolk
Sport; "By ISKC gaining Clubmark, we are setting a shining example for other
clubs to follow. Can I at this time thank the assistant instructors,
Phil Harold, Barry Crozier, for attending numerous courses for ISKC in their own
time throughout this venture, and to thank Alice Donohoe, who is attending the
next sports first aid course, in aid of ISKC, in September this year. That will
bring the number of sports first aid club members to four. Chief

ISKC NEWS
On 16 March, 2008, there was a Brown and Black belt training
session at Wellingborough under the instruction of Sensei Ohta, 6th Dan
JKA England. It was attended by several members of ISKC, both young and
old! We are also thankful for the presence of Carl who made the trip from
Ipswich to support his colleagues.
After the training there was a Black belt grading examination and we are
pleased to announce that Lea Godbold was awarded her Sho dan (1st dan)
black belt. Lea performed one of the best Kata many of us have seen, and
clearly impressed Sensei Ohta and Sensei Ismail. After that the club was
honoured with three more Nidan (2nd dan) black belts awarded to Sempei
Philip Harold, Assistant Instructor ISKC, Andrew Reeves and Cristian Donohoe.
In the kumite bout Andrew performed an outstanding reverse kick (yoshiro
geri) which had the crowd gasping in admiration. Photographs of this memorable
day can be seen here. We congratulate all our colleagues on their well
deserved success.
On 18 March, 2008 at the Maidenhall dojo, Ipswich, Sensei Ohta gave a
training session for the Club. Afterwards he officiated at the Kyu grade
examination. The students of the Club performed well and many passed with
full grades. We would like particularly to mention Michael Heanue-Smith
and Gage Peck who were superb and passed to 1st Kyu. Also we wish to highlight
Bradley Martin and Kyle Skittlethorpe who were excellent and double graded
to green belt and yellow belt respectively. Congratulations to them and
to all the students who took part in the grading examination. We are very
proud of you all.
Sensei Ohta has agreed to teach a session at the Maidenhall dojo, provisionally
scheduled for 17 June, 2008 (but to be confirmed). We all look forward
to that.
